TRANSPORTATION/INFRASTRUCTURE
Broadly, this category includes:
- Federal Highway Administration funding designated for Highway Infrastructure Investment (over $27 billion); and Supplemental Discretionary Grants for a National Surface Transportation System ($1.5 billion)
- Federal Transit Administration dollars distributed through Section 5307 Urbanized Area Formula Program ($5.52 billion); Section 5311 Rural and Small Urban Areas Formula Program ($690 million); and New Starts Program ($750 million) for supporting public transit in communities throughout the country
For Minnesota, these funds are being passed through the Department of Transportation (MnDOT) who has prioritized and allocated funding based on shovel-ready projects currently a part of the State Transportation Improvement Plan.
St. Louis County received official notification from MnDOT on March 11 that two Rice Lake Road Projects were funded. Specifically, the County will receive funding for the mill and overlay project on County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 4 from Central Entrance to Arrowhead Road ($1.6 million) and the reclaim and overlay on CSAH 4 from Arrowhead Road to Martin Road ($2.6 million). In addition, we are receiving $200,000 as a local share of MnDOT's Trunk Highway (TH) 169 subsidence project in Hibbing. This will involve placing reinforced concrete pavement on CSAH 5 from the intersection of TH 169 heading in the north direction. This is great news for St. Louis County. To put this in perspective, St. Louis County received 10.3% of all stimulus road monies going to rural municipalities in the state of Minnesota.
